Diet Timeline: What to Do and What to Expect
The First Two Weeks
Once you’ve started, you will find that you begin to lose weight fast. Some of it will be fat, but initially you will also be passing a lot of urine. It is essential that you drink at least two to three quarts of calorie-free fluid a day or you will become constipated and get headaches. What you drink is up to you, as long as it doesn’t contain calories. It could be ordinary tap water. If you are not thrilled with plain water, try disguising it by adding a squeeze of lemon or lime, or fresh mint and cucumber. I love seltzer with lots of ice and lemon, fruit-flavored tea, and the occasional coffee (with only a splash of milk). Some people like drinking hot water; oddly enough, there is evidence that heat alone can soothe hunger. Drink zero-calorie sodas if you must. But avoid fruit juice and smoothies.
The first two weeks are likely to be the toughest, as your body adapts to fewer calories, but this should in turn lead to some dramatic changes. To give you a flavor of what you are likely to experience and the sort of changes you can expect I asked a friend of mine, Dick, who was about to start the diet, to keep a detailed diary.
“It Was How to Eat Less—but Eat Better”
Dick is a foodie. Nothing wrong with that, but he was eating big portions and drinking too much. “I am not a binge drinker,” he told me, “but six o’clock used to be time for the first gin and tonic. And I don’t mean a small one. Then most of a bottle of wine. Followed by a few whiskies.” Dick may have been exaggerating—but only a little.
Even his nonalcoholic drinks were caloric. He would start each day with four sugars in his mug of tea.
At 215 pounds and with a 42-inch waist, he was overweight. He was beginning to look not only paunchy but also uncharacteristically gray and ill. Shortly after being diagnosed as a diabetic he contacted me for advice. We agreed that he would aim to lose 30 pounds (around 15 percent of his body weight) and get his blood sugars (which were over 163 mg/dl) back down to normal within eight weeks. He also wanted to lose 6 inches from his waist. He had a good-natured bet with his doctor, who said he wouldn’t do it.
Over the first few weeks he managed not only to surprise his doctor but to disprove every cliché about rapid weight loss.
He didn’t feel deprived. On Day 3 of the diet he wrote in his diary, “Still feeling fine. Weird. Not light-headed weird. Weird as in ‘Everyone told me this wouldn’t be possible and I’d be desperate enough to eat the dog, but that is so not the case.’ ”
By then his fasting glucose was already down 30 percent, and when he stood on the scale he found that he had lost 7 pounds in three days.
